︎ Wallpapers as an Art Medium
When I posted my first TikTok illustrating a silly, little wallpaper for my iPhone background, I had no clue it would go viral and resonate with so many creatives around the world. I was a little bewildered, to be completely honest. I wondered, what is it about wallpapers that capture the attention of the masses?
I recently realized, it is a question of accessibility. While people may love and appreciate art, the bar to welcome art into one’s life is often too high. To purchase prints, posters, stickers, apparel, and originals is a tall feat for many art-lovers. But, with smartphones being such a widely used tool today, the background of your phone lock screen is a canvas begging to be painted.
I also noticed that the content of the designs was particularly alluring to many. This academic, diagrammatic, and deconstructed aesthetic is one that demands attention in a world otherwise inundated with information. This intrigue and curiosity for knowledge-based art, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, gives a sense of nostalgia for old, science textbooks and emotional connection in a chaotic and uncertain world.
